The operators also earn their keep on the drive: most break it with the Burren and a stop in Galway city, turning six hours of road into a tour of the west.

When to Move Your Base

If your Ireland itinerary has one flexible night, spending it in Galway is the single highest-value change you can make to a Cliffs visit. You get:

• The cliffs as a half day rather than a whole one
• The option of the Aran Islands or a boat tour on the other half
• Galway itself, which is worth a night on its own terms
• A cheaper tour

If your itinerary is fixed in Dublin, take the Dublin day tour without guilt. It is a long day and a good one.

And Doolin, Which Nobody Mentions

Doolin is closer than either — a village about twenty minutes from the visitor centre, the departure point for the boat tours and the Aran ferries, and the start of the coastal walk. If you are driving Ireland and want the cliffs properly rather than as a stop, stay there rather than in Galway.
